Species Web Map Services

Species habitat and range maps are available in an Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Web Map Service (WMS). Each species’ habitat map or range map is a layer in the respective WMS, referenced by the species’ common name (scientific name) species code and version. At this time all maps are version 1 (v1).

Species Habitat Maps

Example:

To get the habitat map for the Bald Eagle (scientific name: Haliaeetus leucocephalus, species code: bBAEAx) the request would be:

Species Range Maps

Example:

To get the range map for the American Bison (scientific name: Bison bison, species code: mBISOx) the request would be:

More Information

You can use these services in popular Geographic Information System (GIS) software by providing the base urls:
https://www.sciencebase.gov/geoserver/CONUS_Range_2001/wms? or https://www.sciencebase.gov/geoserver/CONUS_HabMap_2001/wms?

In ArcGIS Desktop or ArcGIS Pro, you would do this in the ‘Add WMS Server’ Connection dialog. In QGIS, you would add a new ‘WMS/WMTS’ Connection. See the documentation for your GIS software for full details.
